Desorption of neutral molecules from self-assembled monolayers subjected to keV ion bombardment

چکیده
Laser postionization in combination with mass spectrometry was used to detect neutral molecules desorbed from self-assembled monolayers of phenethyl mercaptan and benzyl mercaptan on gold upon 8 keV Ar bombardment. From experimentally obtained time distributions, it was determined that the majority of the desorbed neutral molecules leave the surface with low translational energies of about 0.03 eV. As the substrate temperature is reduced, the distributions become broader and shift to longer flight times. In combination with mass distributions, these results indicate that the thermal desorption process is initiated by chemical reactions in the organic layer, creating fragments of the original molecule weakly bound to the surface, prior to release. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Desorption of organic overlayers by Ga and C60 bombardment
This paper reviews our recent work on computer simulations of Ga and C60 bombardment of thin organic overlayers deposited on metal substrate. A multilayer of benzene, a monolayer of PS4 on Ag{1 1 1} and a self-assembled monolayer of octanethiol molecules on Au{1 1 1} were irradiated with 15 keV monoatomic (Ga) and polyatomic (C60) projectiles that are recognized as valuable sources for desorpti...
متن کاملEjection of neutral molecules from ion-bombarded organic surfaces.
Time-of-flight distributions of neutral molecules ejected from various organic surfaces have been measured subsequent to 8 keV Ar+ and H2+ ion bombardment. The distributions show that depending on the physical and chemical nature of the substrate, the neutral molecules have strikingly different desorption profiles. For C6H6/Ag¿111¿, at low coverage the C6H6 molecules eject with energies in the ...
متن کاملIon-induced erosion of organic self-assembled monolayers
Laser post-ionization mass spectrometry combined with Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) has been used to investigate processes of ion-stimulated erosion of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of phenethyl mercaptan C6H5CH2CH2S (PEM) deposited on gold. Results indicate that only PEM fragments are emitted from the surface. Most of the PEM fragments (predominantly C6H5CH2CH3 with m/z 106) are emitt...
متن کاملGold-thiolate cluster emission from SAMs under keV ion bombardment: Experiments and molecular dynamics simulations
In this contribution the emission of gold-molecule cluster ions from self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols on gold is investigated using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Layers of alkanethiols [CH3(CH2)nSH] with various chain lengths (n 1⁄4 8, 12, 16) have been chosen because they form well-ordered molecular monolayers on gold. First, we compare and interpre...
متن کاملIon-beam-induced desorption as a method for probing the stability of the molecule-substrate interface in self-assembled monolayers.
During recent years self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been recognized as model structures for different areas in nanotechnology, ranging from nanolithography and molecular electronics to sensors and biocompatible materials. A growing range of possible new SAM applications demands better understanding of their detailed molecular structure, which is a result of balancing molecule–molecule and...
